| | | As the leaves from the calendar fall, we have reached the first of September. August was a good month in the sense of not being a terrible one. Its last week was good for indices and more mixed for the portfolios. The NASDAQ composite up a healthy +3.2%, with the biotech indices registering gains as well, +1.5% for the NASDAQ biotech index and +3.1% for the S&P biotechs. The biotechs are definitely flirting with returning to a net profit for the year.
Looking at the portfolio choices it seems that most of our big movers are just bouncing around, week to week, KZIA: -9.4% last week, +19.1% this; ETON: up +22% then down -11%; BLCM: up +13% then down -27%, PSNL: down -12% then up +18%; OMER: up+12% then down -12%.. The only mover that correlated with press releases, was TWST (+16%) based on signing a “drug discovery agreement” with Ono Pharmaceuticals of Japan. TWST was also included in an analysts list of a “Artisan Small Cap Fund”. ETON’s loss of -11% for the week was in the teeth of a generally positive analyst report that dropped Tuesday.
It is also worth noting that the big losers for the week included two of the top five YTD performers, JSPR dropping -33% on top of a -29% loss last week (enough to drop it in the YTD rankings from second to third) and MOR, -13%.
For the portfolios generally, it was a week of treading water: a small improvement in the average portfolio of +$430. When we look at the specific portfolios roughly the same story, 7 portfolios in the black for the week, 7 in the red and one (the median) with an “accounting error” level of change (-$14). Our top winner for the week was STEVE LOKNESS (+$7.4k), thanks to a 15% holding in PSNL (+$2.7k) and 10% in PACB (+$1.8k), who were the fourth and third best performing stocks for the week. An additional +$1.6k and +$1.4k from NAUT and QSI helped also. This was enough to move him up from fourth to third place in the YTD standings (+$24k), switching with weighed down by JSPR, BLADERUNNER. A.J. MULLEN was in second place for the week (+$5.9k), holding both PACB and TWST, which was enough to rocket him up from last week’s median portfolio to 6th place, passing ARTHUR RADLEY now in seventh. ERIKOTTO and RKRW also switched places, now in second and third respectively. ALONER’s fourth place performance for the week helped open up his margin for first place YTD to $10k, ahead of ERIKOTTO.
A final bit of news, the acquisition of PRDS by MediaPacific was completed Thursday at an acquisition price of $2.13 / share. This resulted in a payout of $12,355.89 to the single portfolio that carried it, a Return on Investment of +24%. This cash was then reinvested into the portfolio’s remaining holdings, using Thursday’s closing prices as reported by Yahoo Finance.
