Much of this of course is due to huge amounts of money the tech industry has made. Leftists and rightists... all white collar people.
That's just one side of the problem, namely the demand.

Regulations are the other side of the problem. They limit supply and prevent enough new homes to be built.

Most of the time, NIMBYism has nothing to do with safer homes. Instead, it's just a tactic used by existing homeowners to protect their home values from dropping.
I'd say conservatives are just as bad. Drug laws are making criminals mountains of money. After 100 years of failed drug wars we are, predictably as the sun rising in the east, worse off.
Oregon already legalized drugs. Now Portland is reversing course (somewhat) and is "banning" open air drug use:

That's the problem with decriminalizing drugs. It simply isn't working, at least not in a vacuum.

What works is tough love on addicts. I believe that solution is orthogonal to whether drugs are legal or not.
