LONDON, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Shares in telecoms company Cable&Wireless Plc rose on Monday following a weekend press report which said the British group was in talks with U.S. software giant Oracle Corp ORCL.O. The stock climbed 1.4 percent or 9p to 632p by 0858 GMT while others in the sector were generally weaker. Rival BT BT.L fell 4-1/2p to 574-1/2p.

The Mail on Sunday said C&W was weighing up a 30 billion pound deal with the American firm. The report quoted Philip Crawford, Oracle's senior vice-president and head of UK Operations, saying there had been talks between the two chief executives and that dialogue was continuing. But a source close to the British company described the
article as "speculation bordering on fantasy." The paper added that C&W was also believed to be in discussions with U.S. regional telephone company Bell Atlantic BEL.N.

A C&W spokesman declined to comment on the market rumours. "Cable is obviously a very attractive partner for a wide range of companies because of its geographical spread," the spokesman said. "We are never short of approaches from those who would like to co-operate with us," he added. Rumours of a possible mega-merger in the telecoms industry
arose out of BT's recent failed attempt to merge with U.S. firm MCI MCIC.O. Recent market speculation suggested the two British firms may revive merger talks held in 1996, when the companies could not decide on a price.

Shares in C&W have outperformed the rest of the UK market by 18 percent over the last month, whilst BT matched the performance of the All Share index. The rumours culminated last week in an announcement by BT denying it was in merger talks with its rival.
