My sister, who have has been dealing with scleroderma for at least 15 years, continues to do really well in the wake of her double lung transplant early this year. Speaking for both her and me, who has also suffered from a debilitating immune system disease, I can say that keeping a positive attitude is vital.

At one point the arthritis society and my rheumatologist tried to persuade me to adopt a handicapped persona at age 32. I went so far as to get a handicapped sticker for my van, but I never used it and refused to join their support groups. Instead I went on to enjoy all sorts of activities that according to them were impossible for me.

This is not one of those 'if only you believe you will get better' travesties, but it is a testament to the power of keeping a positive attitude no matter what your health throws at you.

My ankylosing spondylitis finally left a few years ago after bedevilling me for more than 30 years. I will always have to deal with the damage the AS and the drugs used to treat it did to me, but I continue to find ways to enjoy life. I hope you can continue to do the same.
