Scott, Now that you've got DirecTV, wondering how much you would be willing to pay for a HDTV receiver? I consider myself the typical TV viewer and would balk at anything over $5,000 and would probably hold out for $3,500.
The HDTV pricing issue is huge. 1600 local broadcasters, throughout the US, want to reach their audiences via VSB transmissions as soon as there are sufficient quantities of DTV receivers/converters in place.
The only relatively affordable HDTV receiver announced to date (though, no delivery date announced) is from Daewoo, at $2,500. If Daewoo can sell at $2,500, why does Zenith need to price its 1998 offerings in the $10,000 plus range?
Most Americans don't want 'gizmos'. They want affordable products that deliver high performance. Seems to me that in order for HDTV/SDTV to take off, manufacturers need to deliver sub-$5,000 sets. |
