Apple needs to execute successfully and the "build to suit", "online store", G3's with common motherboards, 4Q profit, are all related successes. As to advertising, Apple could spend 100 mil only to be unable to produce for the new demand, gaining upset customers and bad publicity in business press after spending away their potential profit. The coming CEO announcement will be important to the street's view and stock's price.
What many don't realize is that the 350 programmers working on the MacOS are not just adding "themes" to the desktop. My speculation is that Apple has more cross-platform market targets than presently meets the eye. This includes the forthcoming NCs and the "joint venture" announcement.
Also, the G4s will debut this year with Rhapsody. They should take significant markets away from SG in the media markets in 1999 with prices at least 50% under similar boxes capable of running Mac software and PC software. They should make inroads in markets which have been under NT assault including engineering for gov't. such as aerospace and higher education. Pre-press is a lock with Display Postscript that no other OS has. They should also make outstanding Internet servers.
I expect the advertising to get increasingly more aggressive over this year. The "think different" campaign will become more meaningful over time. Your criticisms will be answered in the next few months through Macworld NYC.
