I dunno! Maybe those big mainframes are easier than those tiny chips!!!

As I understand it (limited) the main issue is not nec. the cores themselves but instead getting the cores to live socially with each other (like good objects in the object oriented computing world...).

S&P UPgraded LSI from "avoid" to "hold" on 5 Feb. 1998:

We have upgraded our opinion on the shares from avoid to hold, as
prospects for a relatively weak 1998 have already been discounted in the
share price. Soft demand in the computer segment and a slow roll-out of
some consumer products that use LSI's chips will cause sales to be
mostly flat near term. Furthermore, the company's current excess
production capacity situation will be exacerbated by the opening of a
new manufacturing plant in July 1998. However, LSI has shown strength
in design-wins and is well positioned for growth in consumer areas such
as digital cameras, set top boxes, and digital video disk. At 21X our 1998
EPS estimate, the shares are fully valued. However, we expect the share
price to be buoyed by emerging growth prospects for 1999.

P.S.
I could be wrong but I think when E. referred to "very interesting" she was referring to the China DVD goings-on not the prognostications of Carl Johnson. Looks like AMAT's on its way to $40+. Will wait patiently on the semi-equips - they should be coming down (I hope!) after the love-fest turns to hate-fest (or so I hope!). Any way so far at least inspite of the semi-equip recovery my ex-semi-equip money is doing better elsewhere. Whether that will continue is to be seen.
