I usually avoid long running sitcoms due to an inherent problem with the genre. It relies on characters essentially staying the same, and eventually even the best writers run out of new ideas. But even though the Australian entrant Utopia has completed five seasons over the last ten years or so, on impulse I starting watching it, which turned out to be a good choice.

Utopia, not to be confused with the recent American sci fi series of the same name, is a satire set in a government agency that is supposed to provide oversight on government-sponsored infrastructure projects. At the centre are two senior administrators, one male and one female, who prove to be excellent straight men among their subordinates, each with their own drives and quirks, and the politicians who are fixated on announcements and photo ops while avoiding real responsibility. And then there are the latest management fads that anyone who has spent time in an office learns to endure, and political correctness and ESG come in for their own set of shots.

The fifth season does show a few signs of fatigue, with some of the situations seeming a little familiar, but as long as you don’t binge it – I took a month to watch the 40 episodes – I think you will enjoy Utopia. Do make sure to stick around for the short skits in the closing credits of each episode.
