CVX my largest position in the portfolio. I got my shares before you were born holding TX in the late 90's. Then CVX did a huge merger/acquisition in 2002 and I received new CVX shares.

Never sold and did a few adds over the years. Dividend good and management excellent.

Have owned a lot of MLP & shale plays in the past but because of the K1 reports, have sold most/all of those. I own several pipelines some have MLP interests and others (like KMI) have their pipeline fees to include a commodity/oil kicker charge. I like these pipelines as they pay a nice dividend and have longer term contracts (over 7 years) so revenues are predictable. My larger positions include WMB, KMI & PBA.

As you build your portfolio, nice to have some dividend payers where you can have those dividends reinvested.

I find oil & even the pipeline companies make a good hedge against inflation. Pipeline can raise delivery fees (some have escalation fees in their contracts to cover higher costs).

It's all about a balance of growth, income & owning the best sectors during the economic cycle. I posted my Ag basket of stocks and need to review my list for div payers, size of holdings & growth vs value. Will probably consolidate that list to fewer positions, get a blended div yield at/near 4% and try to include more growth candidates. Seed development & self driving tractor technology come to mind. The value component includes owning land assets at a good value.
