If you had Alpha and it is selling in the market and acceptted by the customers, then why should you wait for Mercede which will not be available till 1999 with a lot of uncertainity, besides, do not forget HP also own part of Mercede, a competitor of CPQ. For MSFT, it really does not matter whether the NT OS is sold through Alpha or Mercede at all. Besides, Alpha is now in the market (just read the product road map), and it is at least one year earlier than Mercede, and MSFT will get the revenues one year earlier, it is not bad. So, MSFT is holding Alpha on the right hand, and Mercede on the left , and so does CPQ. If the managers in CPQ are fools, then they will abandon Alpha. But from what has been public, that is not the case. I guess, in the comming quarters you will see lots of new products announced by CPQ/DEC powered by Alpha. and Samsung, the world largest manufacturers will back up this Alpha projects with its huge capacity of manufacturing. |
