I've read some Japanese pilots did not want to die, some came back from missions saying they could not find a target, if they came back too many times they were in deep shit
If I were the officer who told the pilot to go find targets, I too would put that pilot in deep s#!t.

"You seriously couldn't find any targets? Really? The Americans are all over the Pacific! They're about to kick our collective a$$e$! Go out there and find a target, or by the gods I swear I will kill you shamefully!"

Poor guys ...
