Vinyl

This should have been a fantastic viewing experience. Start with Martin Scorsese, note that it was made for HBO, and then that it concerns the music scene in New York in the early 1970s, and it sure sounds like the 10 episodes will be a hoot.

There are definitely some fun moments, particularly around the recreation of musical performances from legends like the Velvet Underground and appearance by actors convincingly portraying historical figures like the New York Dolls and Bo Diddly, heck, even Elvis and Karen Carpenter. Just make sure you don’t nitpick about the details being accurate, and you’ll enjoy these.

But for me the basic problem lies with the lead actor Bobby Carnavale, playing the head of a company called American Century Records that is trying to keep it fingers on the pulse in turbulent musical times. I often found myself thinking he was channelling Nicolas Cage, but unfortunately it was the over the top Cage from the blockbusters, not the more interesting one from his better movies. If only they could have afforded Cage for the role...

It is only fair to point out that most of the rating for Vinyl are higher than mine. If you are interested in the era being portrayed, definitely watch it, but if not, I might give it a miss. (BTW, a second season was announced and then cancelled.)
