I remember the old days when one best not wear t-shirts featuring certain national flags, and ones passport can get one into serious trouble

I now fear the return of those days

once upon a time I found self together in a van with one American and several Aussie friends travelling through Manila during coup progression, soon after some white fellow got taken out by sniper whilst peering through binoculars at his hotel window (no idea why he had packed binoculas)

that was a bit unnerving, just a bit, because filipinos are generally friendly, even soldiers, even during coups, and my american buddy who still this day lives in the Philippines full time was packing a pistol by force of habit, however unclear how many bullets he had

I was fairly sure I can melt into the crowds by taking off my nice shirt and show off my tan, but as I did not speak the local language I would have had to head to the fanciest hotel in some haste

luckily we got to the small airfield without incident and headed out of Manila and arrived in totally peaceful Busuanga.

Yeah, those were my bachelor days when a coup is a good reason to visit a place, not too shy away.

Sadly, no photos

here be some from the internet
