Paul, Thanks for the ref. to Tom's Hardware and 440BX tests.
I remember now you mentioned these results before. Not that
much of an improvement, really. Basically, 5 percent. You
might also notice his more recent review of graphics accelerators
including the i740. He says that Winbench 98 is not a good
benchmark for comparing and gives artificially high marks that
are not true to what happens in real applications. This suggests
that i740 is not such an advance, but, it puts competitors on
notice that Intel can match or beat their game and can do it
cheaper. That fits Intel's apparent strategy of driving applications
that consume a lot of CPU cycles and thus demand on processor upgrades
is maintained. However, it doesn't make the i740 a must have product.
It also appears that the 100 MHz bus demands the newer processors
Deschutes 350/400 etc. that don't exist yet. This means both
motherboard and processor upgrades April 15th. As a consumer,
I don't know if I will wait or want to wait.

But as an Intel investor I am quite content with these prospects.

Regards, David S.
Long on Intel and Iomega
