KSC – The Apple strategy leaving open the question of buying more than 20% of their modems for the 2026 model year is typical of a monopsony approach. Apple hopes there are enough suppliers to play one against the other to get the lowest price. This is called monopsony and is every bit as destructive as monopoly. Apple would most likely appreciate Mediatek making some progress on modems, especially if Apple itself can't design and manufacture a satisfactory product on its own. Qualcomm being the only supplier that can offer a top performing modem must really irritate Apple because there's no other competition to force Qualcomm to make a deal that would give Apple an advantage over other handset companies. For the moment (i.e., at least the next two years), Qualcomm has the best modem, capable of supporting all portions of the spectrum anywhere in the world. Chinese companies making Android handsets will undoubtedly capture more business in and outside China by selling handsets that include Qualcomm reference designs and components. If Apple is unable to provide its own modem in a single envelope with its processor chip, consumer demand will eventually affect Apple sales, possibly even in the U.S. Art
