As a slight spoiler for the portfolio YTD rankings, today’s report’s music is by Lord Cornwallis’ Fife and Drum Corp: “The World Turned Upside Down”
This week makes up for the grim tidings in the previous report. The NASDAQ Composite jumped +6.6% for the week, and the biotech indices followed suit: NASDAQ biotech composite was up +6.7%, and the S&P biotech index up +12%. The biotechs are still in the red YTD, but close enough to break even that two or three weeks like this one will get them there.
The top performing portfolio stocks for the week were headed by INZY, +45% of initial price. This is its first good news after a long slide in value since mid September, firming up its hold on the YTD top spot (+200%) although the only news on the wire was Friday’s announcement of details of the new employee stock option plan. Second place TGTX (+35%) at least reported improved earnings this week, as did fourth place MRUS (+31%). OCUL’s (+30%) earnings are due COB next Tuesday. For the losing stocks for the week, the big news is just how few issues were in the red. Only eight out of the 110 stocks chosen for the various portfolios dropped by more than -1%. The worst was KZIA, (-16%), apparently the market’s response to some announced preliminary interim clinical trial results.
The overall positive performance resulted in a gain of +$7.5k to the average portfolio. In fact everyone was in the black, as the very worst portfolio return for the week was still a gain of +$2.3k. The BEST return was by ERIKOTTO (+$15k), powered by an initial 15% placement of third place CABA, 10% of fifth place OCUL, and 5% of top performer INZY. Strong as it was, it was not enough to improve their YTD fourth place position, though they are in the black (+$647). In fact erasing the stain of last week’s report that every portfolio had fallen into the red YTD, there are now four in the black (barely).
STEVE LOKNESS took a second place +$11k gain for the week to shoot into the top YTD spot at +$3k. A look at the portfolio composition reveals that at the moment their profit is due to just three out of nine holdings, headed by more than doubling the $10k investment in DNTH. RKRW kept their second place YTD position (+$1.9k), while ALONER who has occupied the YTD top spot for months has slid to third at +$770, only $120 ahead of ERIKOTTO.
