Speaking of back in the day. When I was 15, too young for my driver's license but still knew how to drive a car, I got a lesson on speedometer cables. My parents took a vacation and left my brother and me behind with an uncle. They also left their new 1949 Chevrolet in the garage. I knew where a car key was and when Uncle Louie wasn't paying attention, a buddy and I disconnected the speedometer cable so my folks wouldn't notice the added mileage on the new car.

We drove it around town where all the girls would be, showed off like only we could then got the car back in the garage before my uncle got home. Panic set in when we discovered a necessary tool was required to get the speedometer cable properly aligned with a thing-a-ma-jig before reinstalling it. Try and try didn't work and we had to abandon the effort and wait for the discovery.

That happened that same afternoon when Uncle Louie immediately spotted tire tracks out and back in to the garage. I confessed, then sweated the next few days before the folks got home. Fortunately, my father was the wonderful man I always knew. We settled on a stern conversation followed by a lengthy grounding.

Nothing is easy if it's wrong....
