Scrublands is a four part thriller set in a small town in the Australian outback. The central event is rather shocking, as a charismatic priest suddenly takes up a rifle and shoots five men dead in front of the town’s population. The other central figure is a blocked journalist who comes to town trying to save his career, soon leading to interactions with the local inhabitants, friendly and otherwise. In may ways, it’s a familiar story, but it is generally well scripted and acted and keep us invested in the story lines.

There were a few problems. The denouement was disappointing, as was the lead actor, who IMO lacked the emotional range to fully realize the part. I kept on thinking that Robert Taylor, who plays the villain, would have done a much better job as the journalist back in his younger days. Still, in spite of these issues, I can still recommend Scrublands.
