Eric, that's the thing. The advantages of heat pumps drops off drastically as the outside temperature drops.

In your calculations, it's still more efficient to use a heat pump over a furnace when the COP is 2.43 at 20 degrees Fahrenheit, but the advantage drops down to 45% vs. 110%.

Plus that heat isn't coming in full blast. Reports are that the vents feel relatively cooler coming from heat pumps vs. furnaces or electrical heating elements.
