I watched the second season of the police series The Chelsea Detective and my verdict was mixed. The setting is enjoyable and the portrayal of the (Usually very rich and/or upper class) usually manages to be amusing without descending to parody. The stories in the four episodes are generally interesting and the denouements satisfying.

So what is the problem? The series is getting way too slick and packaged, like another franchise in the CSI set of programmes, something that became more apparent as these episodes wore on. It never descends quite that low, but to illustrate what I mean, look at the lead detective’s subordinates. They are all very attractive, and their banter is a quality that would never occur in real life, undercutting verisimilitude. I will watch another season of The Chelsea Detective, but it is on probation.
