A bigger percentage of Republicans supported civil rights than was the case for Democrats. The racist Dems were Dem members in good standing. FDR relied on them to get the New Deal passed. Those are simple facts whether they meet your fantasies or not.

Civil rights presented a problem for Dems, which is why the party adopted a policy of running Democrats for President ... Carter, Clinton, Gore. The idea was that natives southerners would be able to hold the formerly solidly Dem south for the party.
