I came to the same conclusion many years ago. As Allan’s Alias used to say, “My stops are smarter than I am”. I’d suggest this relates both to sell stops - and to buy stops.

In other words - have rules which overrule your thinking. For example, maintain a bullish bias when SPX is trading above its 12 month ma — and a defensive, bearish bias when it trades below that ma. Will work beautifully over time.
