I wasn't specifically told about the past of either set of my grandparents either, I grew up thinking they were farmers. Uncle Si who had Polish heritage and told me to never stop learning seemed like the most successful person in the family, I do have good memories of Christmas at his place from when I was very young.

I was told often, "you gotta eat" and I went to school to improve my job prospects and help facilitate that.

Humanity does need to step up. As I continued learning while working it started to seem like I was on a technological railroad making things bigger. I could see it leading to something a lot bigger than I had ever intended. At the last job I had in engineering, there was a moment where the Project Manager said to me, "We need those relief valves." I can't help him with that request so someone else will have to, the only material I received from dad and can offer him in that regard is when I was told "you don't do anything without a shower".

I suspect I first started reading this thread in part because I knew my dad's parents lived through the hyperinflation of the early 1920's. I once asked dad if grandma ever said anything about that time, all that was spoken to me in reply was "she had her money in banks". A few years ago I read the book When Money Dies I obtained in pdf format from the internet about that episode and that phrase 'you gotta eat' gained a little more meaning to me. To me it looks like the spending from the governments of the western world are trying to keep up with each other. I still don't understand how currency exchange rates make sense.
