what Mazda is trying with its Wankel rotary engine

I'll give Mazda credit for thinking outside the box, but there are three problems with the Wankel engine design that have never been completely solved. These include premature wear, mediocre fuel economy and, as you noted, difficulty in controlling emissions.

NSU in the 60's and then Mazda from the early 70's until quite recently, produced rotary engine cars that were quite fun to drive. Maybe Mazda can overcome their inherent problems and good luck to them..
