I wonder if China's greater east Asian co prosperity sphere will go better than Japan's attempt 100 years ago, and back into the 19 th century when Taiwan was a province of Japan, and before that when Japan refused to pay tribute to the Mongol megalomaniacs.

I recommend voluntary association, trade and establishment of common laws.

I don't see why umpty million people in Hong Kong should be totalitarianed by Beijing bosses nor why Taiwanese should be subjugated either. The lease of Hong Kong should have been abrogated as the counterparty ceased to exist and had questionable claim to it anyway.

If Taiwanese choose to sign up like UK did to Europe (until they went Brexit) then that's reasonable. Maybe a similar agreement as Eurostan could work for Taiwan and China. Or maybe Taiwanese would like to join the EU. Maybe England would agree to sign up to China. Or China could apply to England to become part of the United Kingdom
