Perhaps earnings aren't the best way of considering a company's investment proposition.
That was my response. But that would open up the thread to debate which I've been criticised for before. So I deleted it.

Imo, I don't like GAAP earnings. Prefer adjusted free cash flows. GAAP earnings can be subject to manipulation and it seems that the market knows this as earnings are becoming less important to stock market valuations. At least, that's the evidence that's presented in "The End of Accounting."
