Pettis is an academic located in China. He obviously cannot comment on political issues for fear of official retaliation. Bass is a practitioner. Their views do not run in a parallel direction, but they do agree (for different reasons) that China is going in the wrong way, as it has for millenia. That doesn’t make them fellow travelers, a nicely chosen phrase loaded with propaganda value.
I am saddened that you turn a blind eye to non stop oppression, intellectual property crimes, big flashy unnecessary infra projects designed to dazzle fools (the Asian Games being one of many examples, billions down the drain), lack of social safety net, aggressiveness, horrible environmental transgressions, enormous unemployment among the young, bullying of neighbors, many breaches of international law, the thousands killed at Tianmen Square, serious damage to international fisheries, etc., etc., ad nauseum. Oh, and not a single word of apology to the world for the Covid virus its inept laboratories let loose on the globe. Or the mega tons of horse manure it unleashed in a failed attempt to hide and deflect its responsibility.
China is a rogue vampiric nation suffering from collective megalomania and a pathological inferiority complex following a well-worn tragic path. The only thing I hope for is that the damage it will do in the future will be limited to damage done to itself. Unfortunately, history shows that the damage nations such as China do is huge before they stop or are stopped.
We’ll see. |
