He wasn't necessarily a bad person but he wasn't necessarily a good person either. And he wasn't a liberal in the modern sense at all. There's a limit on how far back you can push modern party politics. No matter how much you simplify them ie Dem good, Rep bad in koan talk.

Lincoln freed the slaves but he also tried to push them out of the US and vowed he'd never free them if he could keep the south in the union. I'm sure he meant that.

Lincoln also had a lot of Sioux hanged for murdering white people when they were starving. A lot of Indians would condemn him for that, but he also took the time to go through all the accusations against them personally and leaned over backward to let most of them off. That he took the time to do that makes him on balance a good person.

IOW Lincoln was a complicated person, a mixture of good and bad.

BTW he was also a lawyer for the RR's - the giant industry of the time. Which was natural, he wanted to make money and they had it.
