It is all about tax revenue. Lots of people were using crypto as a tax haven of sorts. PS I am not saying I agree or disagree with the US playing "top cop" in order to receive additional tax revenue. On the other hand, if crypto is billed as an alternative to the USD, which is what many in China were talking about over the past year, then that alternative was eventually going to get taxed too.
