There is no shortage of lithium on a global basis afa I know. If global demand ramps considerably there could be a shortage of raw material availability from too few suppliers awa processing, lot of future projects in the works today.
Solid state batteries can use lithium, QS the leader in the US. They also use other materials, and do not have to use lithium.
QuantumScape (QS -3.20%) is trying to change the electric vehicle (EV) landscape. Its solid-state, anode-free lithium-metal battery technology provides significant benefits that could help springboard mass EV adoption.Jul 28, 2023
QS solid state batteries are close to coming on the market. Market is near w/o limit imo, in any event hughe, and QS is close to a major bottom and turn. Count me in as a buyer near the assumed bottom.

Is QS the global leader in SS? In the US I believe they are, but Toyota, Nissan and maybe Panasonic seem to be up there too. Not sure what the Chinese are doing, but if you are in the battery biz you are doing something with SS for sure.

Storage batteries abound and many at present are lithium ion. Still a lot of lead acid batteries in use as well. Lead acid .... talk about messy dirty stuff.
And as EV's spread, there will be millions upon millions of home storage (powerwall type) awa EV batteries plugged into the grid. If you have solar and/or wind power, you can store and sell this back to the grid at opportune times. And if you don't you will be able to manage and buy power for your EV and/or powerwall at times of lower rates, and sell back at times of higher rates. This is going on today. Tesla, if you have their chit, will manage it for you. They of course take a cut. The virtual powerplant concepts. And it pays, some home consumers who have invested and are particupating are paying for their investments, making money, and in essence are power plus.
The grid of today and tomorrow is not like the grid of yesterday. Yesterday's grid only pushed power out, from power plants. It did not pull any back in from consumers, in general.

GM and F imo are both in a pickle. Look at stock charts. Last I looked they both had well over 100 billion in net debt, Tesla is essentially debt free.
Sandy is no dummy when it comes to autos, used to work for F/GM. He makes a statement in this discussion that he suspects trouble for both. Elon stayed mum. Basically they did not keep up with new technology. Interesting stuff here.

Sandy is predicting a repeat of the 70's, when Japan took over the US auto market. Except now it will be Tesla and the Chinese. |
