Neither China nor the US make the grade. Surprisingly, neither does Israel.
China’s rank suffers on account of its huge relatively uneducated rural population. We suffer from a poor public elementary and high school system, lowered standards, etc., but the elite schools, typically private, are top notch. A STEM education at MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford, and Harvard is the global standard to which bright technically oriented kids everywhere aspire.
Vast majority of the educated as well as best schools are in the global north.
The best universities are overwhelmingly American, British, and Canadian with a tiny sprinkling of Chinese. Harvard I am sure is down a few notches after its fateful experiment in high level wokeness.

China’s progress will be stymied by political matters and ideology. Best to recognize that Xi is a huge ideologue and that he sees everything through flawed Marxist lenses. He sets the tone, which is authoritarian and anti-freedom.
The mother’s milk of progress is freedom not ideological control.
Can you imagine Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos disappearing for a while for a bit of re-education like Jack Ma? I’m sure there are dozens like Ma, just unknown. Does that inspire investor confidence?
Or secretaries of state or defense being quietly purged?
Or zero Covid without an insurrection?
You can’t fool all of the people all of the time, no matter how good the propaganda. |
