The dominate quality of the Greek mind was its persistent effort to supplant myth to reason. Because whereas myths may change, reason remains the same... I read half of Will and Ariel Durant's series The Story of Civilization (and I should make more of an effort to finish them). With all due respect to the Durants, I think the effort to supplant myth with reason was more of a notable exception rather than the rule.
