They used some scientific methods to develop it. Real research and development. Building a small scale wind tunnel and other tools to measure lift, thrust and drag. That had not been done before. A real process of engineering. And no classes existed in any school at the time to accomplish the tasks necessary. Having been a pilot with many type ratings and an FAA Certified Flight Instructor myself for over 40 years and having taught hundreds of people to become pilots it's still amazing to see where we have come since their first successful powered flight in 1903.
