And we’re off! The first week of the 2024 Contest, with four days of trading, has results!

Not a great start for the NASDAQ Composite, dropping -3.2%. On the other hand the NASDAQ Biotech composite managed a decent +1.3%. The S&P biotech index was essentially flat.

No big winners/losers for the week (once we tidied up JSPR by including its 1 for 10 reverse split). First place ENTA (+29%), but it was on the basis of a press release whose “news” was "Enanta’s President and Chief Executive Officer, will provide an update across its pipeline and plans for 2024 during Enanta’s presentation at the 42nd Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at 9:45 a.m. PT.”and some positive words by the analysts of Zacks. Second place PMN (+21%) news was that a recently installed interim CEO wrote a letter to the stockholders about their “platform”, enhanced, you will be glad to hear, by “leveraging AI” and “aggressive with (their) Intellectual Property protection.” Also lots a products, and some clinical trials going out even as they deliver the press release.

The worst performing stocks were STRO and VERU, tied, both dropping -19% for the week. Yahoo Finance wasn’t able to kick up a single article or press release for STRO. In the case of VERU there was an Investor Call Thursday morning on the subject of future steps with their treatment used in parallel to a weight loss pill in order to inhibit muscle loss. Maybe the Investors didn’t like what they heard on the call?

The portfolio performance during the first week was decent: a gain of +$235.60 to the average portfolio, and the median portfolio was +$1.7k in the black, eclipsing even the NASDAQ biotech composite for the week.

The top portfolio was DEW_DILIGENCE, up +$5.4k thanks to the purchase of $20k worth of top performer ENTA. This gain was almost double the second place performance (+$2.8k) of BULBAMAN from a 10% stake in PMN. Stay tuned for next week.
