Paul, You made some good points re: i740
<<Notice TOM neglected to discuss the "quality" of the images and the ultimate visual output of the
boards he tested. That, of course, is difficult to quantify, but all other reviewers (JA Peddie, Dean
McCarron & Microprocessor Report) have indicated that the i740 has perhaps the best visually
pleasing displays, if not the fastest.

Bear in mind what Tom also neglected to say - the i740 is a 2D AND a 3D and a VIDEO chip his
Voodoo favorite is simply a 3D accelerator. I'm not sure of the VooDoo^2 is both.>>

The Voodoo2 is what Tom used and it is only a 3D accelerator.
That means another 2D chip is needed for ordinary graphics.
The RIVA 128 (nVidia) was marginally faster than the i740 in his test,
and that is both a 3D and 2D chip.
Your point is image quality is better with the i740 and that could
be important vs. superfast framerate. Clearly high speed games
are a limited market. Those reviews you mention, are they on line?

Nonetheless, Tom points out that Winbench 98 numbers don't always
tell the story on fast performance.
