Trump Is About to Lose Big
A Few Thoughts for the End of the Week

TAEGAN GODDARD

JAN 12, 2024

After a civil fraud trial in New York City that’s lasted many months, Donald Trump lost it with an outburst in the courtroom.

Trump attempted to make some of his closing arguments himself — which were described as “chaotic and emotional” — before getting shut down by the judge who told his lawyers to “control your client.”

Shouted Trump: “I am an innocent man. I’m being persecuted by someone running for office, and I think you have to go outside the bounds.”

Trump then held an impromptu news conference outside of the courtroom where he criticized the judge and the entire case once again as a “witch hunt.”

Adding to the day’s tension, the exchanges took place hours after authorities responded to a bomb threat at the judge’s house in New York.

If the case were being decided by a jury, Trump’s showmanship might have had some meaning. But his lawyers apparently made a mistake and the fate of Trump’s businesses in New York will instead be decided by the same judge Trump has attacked repeatedly.

In addition to paying as much as $370 million in penalties, Trump faces the very real prospect of being banned from the real estate business in New York. The judge has already found that Trump habitually exaggerated his wealth on financial statements, while deceiving a bank and insurance companies.

It would be a truly stunning fall for a man who built his image as a successful real estate magnate. Without that image as a successful business — dramatically inflated by his reality televison show — there’s no way Trump would have ever been elected president.

Trump knows he’s going to lose this case. His outbrust in the courtroom was just another attempt to distract from the devastating verdict ahead.

The judge set a deadline of January 31 for his decision.
