Quebec: Muslim charged with inciting hatred against ‘group not identified on the charge sheet’ for supporting Hamas

Gee, what group could it be? Hottentots? Sentinelese? Tuvans?

Actually, we know very well which group was Houssem Hammami’s target, but the Montreal Gazette is wary of identifying it. Now, why is that? Could it be that the Montreal Gazette, like Houssem Hammami, likes Hamas, and doesn’t want to portray Jews in a sympathetic light?

Meanwhile, although I have no sympathy for Houssem Hammami, the idea of having “inciting hatred” be a criminal charge is just inviting tyranny. Those in power who dislike the speech of their opponents can claim that they’re inciting hatred, and silence them accordingly.

“Montreal resident charged with inciting hatred in October,” by Paul Cherry, Montreal Gazette, January 10, 2024:

A Montreal resident faces a criminal charge alleging he incited hatred toward an identifiable group by reportedly supporting Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel on social media.

The charge filed against Houssem Hammami, 37, became public at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday. He has been summoned to make his first court appearance later this month. He is alleged to have incited hatred, between Oct. 14 and Nov. 1, toward a group not identified on the charge sheet and that “such incitement is likely to result in a breach of the peace.”…
