I'm a full-time lurker these days but seeing your question about heat pumps caught my eye. I lived most of my life in Colorado, where few, if any, heat pumps were ever seen. Several years ago, I moved to Southern AZ just to retire and be warm. The very first winter here in SoAz we got a couple of 2-3 inch snows! Unusual but occasional I was quickly informed. Homes in this area are equipped with the necessary Air Conditioning to survive about 3/4 of each year. The winters are usually kept comfortable with heat pumps.... unless those snowstorms drop the outside temps to the 30 degrees and lower. A phone call to my Heat and A/C service enlightened me. The home heat units typically come with a backup traditional furnace (gas or electric) for just those chilly occasions. If you're thinking heat pump for that Northern remodeling, better check it out very completely. My experience here in AZ would suggest a heat pump isn't your answer. Houston would be a different story, I'd guess.
