U.S. blue chips off highs as techs, oils slip

NEW YORK, Feb 17 (Reuters) - U.S. blue chips were firm but off their session peaks in late trading on Tuesday as technology and oil stocks came under some pressure.

Traders said technology stocks were hit by profit taking following their recent rally-leading run. Oil shares came down with the
price of crude, which traded at 46-month lows as traders saw diplomatic efforts temporarily holding off a military strike on
Iraq.

The Dow was up about 26 points, 0.3 percent, at 8395 after hitting a peak of 8446. The NYSE lifted its trading curbs at 1431 EST/1931 GMT.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite was off six points, at 0.3 percent, to 1705.

Microsoft Corp (MSFT - news) was off 2-11/16 to 154-13/16 and Oracle Corp (ORCL - news) eased 13/16 to 25-11/16.

Among oil and oil service shares, Exxon Corp (XON - news) was off 13/16 to 62-5/16 and Schlumberger Ltd (SLB - news)
fell 2-3/4 to 73-1/2.
