Thousands of years ago, heck just hundreds of years ago the tools to see and study viruses and bacteria did not exist. Let alone at the molecular level! They could only see the effects on the body. Such as cow pox. You don't even have to go to med school to learn this! I've just about never laughed so hard in my life!
