I was there during the winter of 2005, one night a lawyer I know wanted me to accompany him during a transaction. He was meeting a young woman on behalf of a client to give her some cash and documents so she could travel to Canada to marry a farmer. Plus a client of his had passed away and left everything to his brother and sister that farmed in Ukraine, he paid them off and we drank multiple pints of Guinness and then went to a hockey game, Kiev vs. Belarus. Then we went to a casino, you walk in the front door and get on this elevator operated by a midget for about a minute and then the doors open on the other side, you have not moved at all. We walked several miles back to where we were staying, getting intercepted by soldiers who wanted to see passports, twice... Condoleezza Rice was staying down the street and security was tight. We got back to the square about about 3:00 a.m. and needed more booze, the only open place was a kiosk operated by Boris who was drunk and passed out on the floor. Boris's friend the taxi driver was watching the kiosk while Boris snored. At that time you could not buy Brahma beer in Canada but there it was in Boris's little kiosk. My hotel was about 100 feet from the kiosk and all the lights were out, I politely tapped on the door to get the attention of the security, the security guard was fast asleep on the lobby couch he was sharing with two Kiev hookers. The taxi driver said no no no, like this and started banging on the door which woke up everyone. A typical evening in Ukraine...
