Intel, TSMC reportedly discuss
foundry deal for MPUs and i740

By Mark LaPedus

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Intel Corp. is reportedly in talks with Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) here to have certain
microprocessor products and graphic chips manufactured by the silicon
foundry.

Sources said reports are circulating around Taiwan indicating that Intel could
decide to have its high-end Pentium II processors and new i740 chips made
by TSMC, the world's largest IC-wafer foundry company. Officials from
Intel and TSMC declined to comment on possible talks between the two
companies, however.

One local analyst said it was unlikely that TSMC would make Intel's
Pentium II. Instead, the analyst said it was more likely that TSMC would
make Intel's i740.

Intel and TSMC are certainly no strangers. TSMC already makes selected
microcontroller products on a foundry basis for Intel. If Intel decides to have
microprocessors made by the Taiwan foundry, it would be TSMC's second
agreement covering MPUs in recent months. Late last year, Cyrix
Corp.--now a subsidiary of National Semiconductor Corp.--signed a deal
to have its code-named "M2" processors made by TSMC.
