Need to get your will & trust in order. I have the 20 year plan to transition all assets to next generation working with my young successor trustee. Going over how/what will be moved, looking at kids goals, needs, possible generational investments (income property) and how to analyze.

Huge gains can be achieved in step up in basis when you die. Many equities w/ low cost basis get that step up too as does that income property. The kids have these college degrees but are never taught the details and how to structure the estate so it is tax efficient & all those lifetime earnings/gains are passed over w/ limited (or no tax).

I expect this transition will take years if not decade and hopefully have a fun time on this part of the journey.

These pipeline companies and other dividend payers make a great base/core of this plan. Now you must think decades rather than years and what the needs of the next generation will be.

The takeaway for KMI is the ROC from those dividends is/could be a good thing is passed to your heirs as they receive a step up in the cost basis. As a result I never plan on selling my KMI in my lifetime.
