Well, here we are, the fourth report of the contest and the wrap up for January. Fortunately, it is more reminiscent of the second week than the third or first. Too soon to tell whether this good-news/bad-news rhythm will continue. And this week is pretty good news. A whole string of record highs in the S&P 500, but the tech heavy NASDAQ Composite eeked out a +0.9% for the week, producing +$3k of profit for the week of January. The biotech indices were also up +0.3% for the NASDAQ Biotech and +1.2% for the S&P biotechs. The gain in the S&P biotechs was not quite enough to erase the -3.7% loss of the previous week, so that a $100k bet on it is still underwater at -$1.3k for January and the year to date.

For the portfolio selections, the big winner for the week was PYXS, up +90% of its original price with no accompanying news and generated primarily by trades on Tuesday and Friday. In fact, the Yahoo Finance news feed gave no hint as to why any of the top five stocks for the week generated returns greater than +30%, with the exception of LXRX (+34%) which took off on Tuesday after being identified as one of the "3 of the Fastest-Growing Stocks on the Planet in 2024” in a Motley Fool article released Tuesday morning. (The other two were Electric vehicle manufacturers' stocks. The Fool did not specifically note any of these as an appropriate “Buy”, warning investors off one of them specifically. I mean, you have to wonder at why they anointed these, specifically, at all.)

On the losing side of the ledger, the worst for the week was CNSP (-28%), which has had previous appearances on the bottom five for the week, all adding up to its position as the biggest loser YTD, (-67%), moving down from 3rd worst the previous week. Second worst loser for the week is LPTX (-18%), muscling its way into the bottom five YTD at the number 3 position (-41%). And PMN (-17%, third worst for week), a second straight week of decline from its big +103% gain. Its Monday news release of “progress” in a phase I study of their Alzheimer’s treatment was apparently not enough to staunch the bleeding. Still, although eclipsed by this week’s big winner, PYXS, PMN still has a pretty strong hold on the second place YTD spot, +75%.

The contest portfolios had their best week of the year, so far, gaining on average +$2.9k, returning the average YTD return in to the black (+$580). Thirteen of portfolios added value for the week, pushing eleven into a net positive YTD return, almost as good a situation as the contest had on week two.

Getting down to specifics, the best portfolio for the week was ERIKOTTO, +$11.1k, just under half of which was thanks to a 5% position on PYXS. This rocketed him to second place, YTD, +$9k. BULBAMAN is still holding onto the top position, +$16k, $6.7k ahead of ERIKOTTO. TOMATO had the second best performance for the week, +$10.9k, having included both TARA and TCON in his selections. JR_95 was in third for the week (+$5k) , and moved up a place to third in YTD rankings as well (+$5.6k), passing TRACE I11as it from second to fourth YTD (+$5.5k).
