>>Why the fuss about the Sony drive?<<

I'm going to be buying a new system after Win98 is released. I'm planing on having either the LS-120 or the Sony as my 'floppy' and the SyJet as the second 'removable' drive.

>>Imation et al have had their LS120 drive out for a while and it seems to be a big yawn. Why expect anything more from the Sony? I'm far from being an expert on the technology, but isn't this just another high capacity floppy with the attendant slow transfer rates?<<

The LS-120 has gotten off to a slow start, in part because Microsoft didn't release Win97 as expected. Without the OS supporting a drive it's kinda risky offering it for sale. To the best of my knowledge, Gateway is the first large, discount, OEM to be offering the LS-120 as an option and they've started offering it just recently. There is a SCSI LS-120 out there but it's too new for Gateway to offer.
