Depends on how you define "earn," I guess. Seems to me he did more to "earn" his billions than anyone who buys stock in a company but otherwise does nothing for it.

I understand the scale of his wealth makes him stand out, but the principle is the same as any founder of a company that goes public and becomes very successful. They generally do more to earn their money than people who simply put cash into a stock, get lucky and hold it for decades while it appreciates in value.
