After further thought, I realized you're correct, Allen did sort of luck into his billions given that Gates and crew did most of the heavy lifting in the years after he left that drove up the stock price. It would be interesting to know how things might have gone differently at Microsoft for Allen had he not gotten sick early on. I'm glad he used his wealth to start other ventures instead of living like a playboy the rest of his life. He employed a lot of people. > Sadly with that much money and resources he could not save himself which is really ironic. A friend who is one of the smartest people I've ever known, a genius really, didn't take care of himself physically over the years and has always been overweight. He now has many physical problems as he ages even though money is not an issue for him and he has plenty to spend on medical care. As Russell Crowe's character Maximus said in Gladiator: "Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back."
