and did the weather conditions at the time contribute to the Pitot tubes freezing up?

i.e if the pilots had manage to avoid the bad weather cell, would the accident have happened?

Mind you, we don't hear of the close calls, they could of continued to be a risk (freezing Pitot Tubes in a bad weather cell) until the exact same accident did happen.

As you say, thousands of aircraft in the air at any one moment, statistics happen.
