Couple of weeks - good deal, you won't regret it. But Dan, this "dos cervezas, por favor" business, this is part of the Big Gringo Lie. If you think about it, you don't go into a bar and ask for "two beers, please", you must ask for specific brands and sizes. So - a brief summary;
Beer in M‚xico is of a high quality, brewed - naturally enough - by Germans. On the Pacific coast as far south as Acapulco, the best brand imho is Pac¡fico. It is sold in one-litre bottles, called ballenas (bah-YAY-nahs), which means "whales", but don't worry, they don't serve whales in bars there, you won't be presented with an embarrassment.
In Chiapas, and any other parts of the south of interest (of which there are none, especially including Canc£n), the term for a litre bottle is caguama (cah-GHWA-mah, the word refers to a type of turtle, but again, don't worry, from the bartender you cannot buy a turtle, ask the guy beside you for that), and the best brand is Superior, from which derives my real name, el Sup-Tomandante. If you buy the cheaper-in-bulk litre bottles, you will not come across as such a more-money-than-brains gringo.
Hope this helps - and to anyone who thinks that this is off-topic; Let me suggest that perhaps you have spent insufficient time in Latinoam‚rica. When those judges from la Corte Suprema knock off, do you think they go out for coffee???
Dos ballenas/caguamas de Pac¡fico/Superior, por favor ......... salud ..... marcos
PS - Negra Modelo is good too, only comes in small bottles (big money, hasta ocho pesos, depende), order this if you wish to appear a high-roller -g- |
