MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 1998--VERITAS Software Corporation (NASDAQ:VRTS), a leading provider of end-to-end storage management software, and ADIC (NASDAQ: ADIC), a leading drive-independent supplier of automated tape libraries, Tuesday announce a product licensing and development agreement designed to deliver integrated backup and media management capabilities for Windows NT users.

Through the agreement, the partners will deliver integrated backup and media management capabilities for Windows NT users and bring the automated data protection functionality traditionally available only in large, UNIX-based data centers to Windows NT environments. The initiative will simplify administration of distributed storage in Windows NT enterprise networks, while lowering storage management costs.

Under the terms of the agreement, ADIC will offer a network storage solution that will combine a new, single-server version of VERITAS' NetBackup with ADIC's new FastStor DLT storage system. The partnership will break new ground in Windows NT data protection by providing close integration between VERITAS storage management software and a range of ADIC automated tape libraries. This integration will make built-in failover -- the capability for one backup device to take over automatically when another fails -- widely and economically available for Windows NT networks.

Additionally, the technology partnership calls for VERITAS to port selected capabilities of VERITAS Media Librarian from UNIX to Windows NT 4.0 specifically for use with ADIC tape libraries. The Media Librarian technology will provide an API to enable Windows NT-based storage management applications to monitor and manage ADIC robotic devices remotely. The Media Librarian technology will also enable ADIC libraries to be easily shared between multiple applications, saving users time and money in the configuration and use of their storage systems.

"We see effective centralized storage management and automatic failover as critical capabilities for Windows NT systems. This combination of technologies provides protection for distributed data and the security of centralized control, while increasing scalability, performance, and data access speeds," according to Bill Britts, ADIC vice-president of sales and marketing. "Coupled with a small, low-cost automated tape system like the new ADIC FastStor DLT, device failover capabilities in a product like VERITAS' NetBackup for Windows NT allows NT users to design easily scalable,
high-speed backup systems with unprecedented levels of redundancy and reliability."

"As NT is increasingly deployed in the enterprise, customers require simplified management of their NT-based storage systems," said Peter Levine, senior vice president of OEM sales for VERITAS Software. "Part of this simplification involves tighter integration between storage hardware and software products to deliver whole solutions that give greater return-on-investment. The combination of VERITAS NetBackup and Media Librarian with ADIC's industry-leading tape libraries will give users an affordable, best-of-breed solution that provides many of the essential elements of an enterprise-level storage management solution."
